Augmented Reality (AR) for Architecture

Unlike Virtual Reality, AR does not replace real world with the virtual one. In AR Layers of digital information are added onto the physical world.

Augmented reality as a technology appeared back in the 90s. But at that time it was used only by engineers and doctors. Today, augmented reality is presented in every smartphone.

For example, on Instagram, it is represented by masks and filters in the story camera. The puppy filter superimposes a dog’s ears and nose over top of your picture, moving with you as you move – it’s augmented reality.

But what about visualization studios and architectural firms? How can we benefit from AR?

Every project goes through the certain stages of formation. The very first phase is gathering imagery and collecting data. And at this early stage AR can already be very useful. Using AR Measure on your cell phone you can calculate distances in real spaces, measure objects and also draw plans from a real room.

3D Visualization stage. 3D visualization helps to see what a project is going to look like once it is completed. We use architectural visualization to better communicate the vision, to improve marketing, to identify design flaws at the very early stages and to reduce costs for the constructions.

It seems that AR can help us even more here. Imaging a life-size virtual model hologram of your 3D project. So if you want to you can actually walk through your future space, explore it, or even make a change in real time – replace a piece of furniture, change color or material.

On the construction stage AR could be beneficial as well.

Imaging large-scale 3D model in real environment during the construction of the facility. An architect or consumer can compare work-in-progress with the original design. Some apps can even give you full-size construction instruction base on your 3d model to help you facilitate the construction of complex projects.
